Lost

Book blog
December 12, 2014

This week I read Lost written by Sarah Beth Durst. This book is a fiction book about a girl named Lauren who become trapped in a town called lost. Every time she tries to leave this town, she somehow gets lead back. The only way to get out of the town in to figure out what she is missing, and this book is about how she does that. I like the main character, because she seemed believe able. I thought that this book was pretty good, it was not the most amazing book that I have ever read, but I thought that it was not bad. I thought it was pretty well written, but it could have had a bit more detail. Overall I thought that it was a decent book and I would recommend it if you like romance tried in with mystery.

Next three books-  Outliers, My Mother the Cheerleader, and The Martian

Chaotic

Slice of Life
November 10, 2014

"Where does this go again?" "Can I have the tape?" "Bring me the tape." "Well why don't you help them?" Decorating for a holiday would seem exciting, calm, and relaxed, but it is pretty chaotic. People scrambling around, someone lying on the middle of the floor, a burning smell coming from the kitchen, and sharp things, everywhere. Suddenly through the misted of it, it starts to roll of the table, and its made of glass. Straight onto the hardwood floor, there is shattered glass everywhere.

Kindred

This week I read Kindred, which is a book group book. This book is about a black women named Dana, who keeps getting transported back to the past, where racism is a major issue. Every time she goes back she has to save her great-great-grandfather. In the current time she lives in, when she goes back time stops, but when she leaves the past, time speeds up. This book is a really well written and interesting book. It is confusing if you try to figure everything out in the beginning, and not everything gets answered. This book is science-historical-fiction. It talks a lot about slavery and what black people had to deal with in the past from a very interesting perspective. However, saying this, it is not all about history,it also puts in time travel and Overall I would definitely recommend this book, but it is pretty intense.

LIfe is not fair, but it is not unfair either

Unfairness and envy are similar. I think people always want what they cannot have, and do not realize that they cannot always get what they want. The way I see it envy makes us think that what we have is unfair. There is not a specific time that I can remember, these two things have always been there, hovering around us like. I hear a question about unfairness at least twice a week. At school, home, and in public. Why is the question not, "Why do they get that, even though I get this." Maybe asking that would make people realize what they are actually asking. Life is not fair, but it is not unfair, and we should be more thankful and grateful for what we have, because there is always somebody who is in a worse situation.

Uglies

This week I read the fiction book Uglies written by Scott Westerfield. This book is about a girl named Tally where people are either ugly or pretty. Everyone starts out uglies, but on their sixteenth birthday they go through a procedure to make them what society thinks is pretty. A few webs before her sixteenth birthday, Tally meets Shay, and they find out they have the same birthday. Days before there birthday, Shay tells Tally of a place where people have ran away to escape the society they are living in. shay runs away, and the specials threaded Tally to find her or never be pretty. What will she choose? I thought that this book was really good. I liked Shay. It was really descriptive, and futuristic, so it seems like something that could actually happen. Overall I would definitely recommend this book to everyone.

Thanksgiving Slice of LIfe

Thanksgiving. We normally do the whole traditional meal and going around the table telling what are we thankful for with at least 25 people of all ages. Not this year, in fact almost exact opposite. An Italian restaurant and no frozen lake out the window, but an ocean with crashing waves reflecting the sun. There was not even much talk about thanksgiving other than my mother, "Lets go around the table." The restaurant offered thanksgiving, but how can you eat something and compare it to a familiar and favored meal. It is just not the same, but it is not bad either.

Fangirl

This week I read Fangirl written by Rainbow Rowell. This book is about a girl named Cath who is a huge fan of Simon Snow. A writer her and her twin sister Wren have followed since they were little. I was what connected them and helped them through everything hard in their lives. When they go to high school Wren decides she does not want to be roommates with Cath and Cath begins to have a hard time figuring out who she is without her sister. I thought that this book was good. My favorite character was Wren because she seemed so real. It was not my favorite book, but it was not terrible. I think that it was a well written book, that many people would enjoy reading. Overall I would recommend this book.

Icy

Slice of life - November 17, 2014

When the first snow came the weather outside has an intense chill that slithered down my spine. Ice rans through my veins. Conversation ended as the snow began to fall. We hurried inside and the warm tried to take on the cold still addicted to our faces, resulting in our faces turning bright red. After the color came back we went out again. The snowflakes fell and latched onto our eye lashes. Our breath floated and danced around us, wandering with no destination. The snow builded up and soon people are made piles to jump into just like the leaves from the last week. The leaves had not even all fallen off, it had changed so quickly.

I am Malala

November 16, 2014 - I am Malala

This week I read the non-fiction book, I am Malala written by Malala Yousafzai. This book is a self written biography about a girl named Malala who grew up in Pakistan. When the Taliban took over she spoke up for girls education and on a school bus home from school, she was shot in the head. This book was amazing. It had some more mature content, but it gave another view of what was going on in the world. I liked how it was non-fiction, and it was not boring one bit. Overall I would definitely recommend this book.

Cobble stone

Slice of Life - November 12, 2014

Walking through the streets is a different experience all together. The cobble stone, unfamiliar underneath my feet. My mom struggling in her high heels. So unlike the smoothed concrete street of colorado. The overwhelming smells, both good and bad. Pizza, flowers and wine. So strong, deeply inhaling, it can almost be tasted. Shops line the street and in between the blocks dark alleys. People walking all around us speaking one of beautiful romance languages. The tone of their voices are uplifting and bright. This is Italy.

Looking for Alaska

I read Looking for Alaska written by John Green. This book is about a guy named Miles Halter. In his junior year of high school, he heads off to Culver Creek Boarding school. While sitting in his room with new roommate, he meets a girl named Alaska Young. She becomes close friends with him. I really liked this book. It was written in a way that was like a roller coaster of emotions. Lastly the book was really well written. The content warning covers the whole book, it talks about everything there is, drugs, language, sex, and such. I would definitely recommend this book.

An old swing - Slice of life

Slice of life - November 4, 2014

The cold crisp air blows my hair back. Back and forth, back and forth. The swing set is old and closed to breaking. The seat has a rip but it supports. Going back and forth. Watching the kids play soccer across the street and  the people walking their dogs talking to each other as the dogs become friendly. The cars streak by like a blur, so fast even the color is unidentifiable. Getting higher and higher, feet not touching the ground. Faster. Letting go of the swing. Flying.

Breathing Underwater

This week I read Breathing Underwater written by Alex Flinn. It is a fiction book about a guy named Nick Andreas. To everyone around him he seems like the charming popular guy, but on the inside everything is different. Suddenly he has to go to anger management for hitting his girl friend and keep a journal. He is dealing with his girlfriend, his behavior, and his father, who is abusive. I really liked the main character in this, because he was believable and it was dealing with real issues. I liked this book. I think that it was well written, but it was a little hard to follow. Overall I would definitely recommend this book. My book group is kindred.

Eleanor and Park

This week I read Eleanor and Park written by Rainbow Rowell. It is about a girl named Eleanor and a guy named Park who are both sixteen and do not necessarily fit in. On the first day of school they are forced to sit together due to lack of seating on the bus. Eventually they sit together every day and become friends, then more than friends. I really liked this book because I think it was really well written and it had so much feeling and depth in it. CONTENT WARNING: Pretty much the whole book, it is more of a mature book that touches on pretty much every subject.

Ready Player One

This week I read Ready Player One written by Ernest Cline. This book takes place in the year 2044, society is a mess and everyone is stuck in a virtual world named OASIS. In OASIS there is a hidden lottery ticket, that is everyone dream to find. Wade Watts has spent his whole life trying to find this ticket, suddenly it becomes more than a game and Wade has to fight between the game, the players, and the real world. I though that this book was kind of weird, I was kind of confused when I first read the book, but eventually things started to make sense. Overall I liked this book and I would recommend it.

Swallowing Stones

This week I read Swallowing Stones written by Joyce McDonald. This book is about a boy named Michael, who on his seventeen birthday shot his rifle into the air. On the same day and same time, Jenna's father, who is repairing the roof, gets shot. Michael does not know that he just killed him. This book is about how both Michael and Jenna have to deal with this issue. I love this book, it is very interesting and full of action. There is no warnings that are very serious, there might be a little language.

Between Shade of Grey

I read Between shades of Grey written by Ruta Sepetys. This book is about a girl named Lina and her brother and mother who one night are taken out of their house in Lithuania and deported to a concentration camp in Siberia. They have to go through brutal treatment and being treated like slaves. I loved this book because it is shown from the perfect perspective. Not from an adult or like a really young child, but from somebody who understands for the most part what is happening. Content Warning-- There are a few parts that some people might not like, but overall it is not too bad. Overall I would definitely recommend this book.

The Maze Runner

This week I read The Maze Runner written by James Dasher. This book was fiction and it starts out with a boy named Thomas who wakes up into this maze and only remembering his name. He has a box of supplies with him and is very confused. Then he meets this group that is also in the maze and was waiting for him to arrive for the supplies. They are trying to get out of the maze that they are in but the doors on the edge are only open during the day and you do not want to be stuck in the maze during the night. I did not really like this book, it was really slow in the beginning and to me it did not really pick up until the end of the middle where it was kind of too late.

The Summer of Letting Go

This week I read The Summer of Letting Go written by Gae Polisner. It is a fiction book that  starts out with the girl named Francesca (nicknamed Frankie) whose younger brother died when he was four. Frankie has always felt responsible for his death. She then begins to start babysitting a boy (also named Frankie) who reminds Francesca of her younger brother and they create a unique close relationship. Along with this she also starts to like her best friend's boyfriend. I really loved this book. It was really well written and kind of mysterious. It was also a pretty believable book and I felt like I was there watching the story happen.

Next three books to read-
1. Looking for Alaska
2. Unbroken
3. Eleanor and Park

Everybody Sees the Ants

This week I read Everybody Sees the Ants written by A. S. King. This book is about a boy named Lucky Linderman who is a freshman in high school. He has been bullied by a guy named Nader since kindergarten. Also when Lucky dreams he, he dreams of his MIA grandfather who was in the Vietnam war. Eventually Lucky finds himself caught between his dreams and reality. I thought that this book was amazing and I really enjoyed it. I think that it was written in a pretty unique way, where you kind of half to figure out what is going on along the way. The genre of the book is Fiction but it has some non-fiction elements to it. Warning: There is some mature language in this book and they talk about some mature things, so if you do not like that type of thing I would not recommend reading it.

It is told from the view of a guy who is on the tape. I really loved this book, it was interesting because it took you through her life, but from another persons perspective. I would definitely recommend this book, there is a little bit of language in it, but it was a amazing book.

Allegiant

This week I finally read Allegiant by Veronica Roth. It is about Tris and Tobias going outside the fence and even though they thought that their lives would get easier but it turns out to be anything but. I really liked this book other than the beginning which did not have much plot, but as the book went on it got a lot better and I really liked it.

Awake at Dawn

This week I read Awake at Dawn written by C. C. Hunter, this is the second book in the Shadow Falls series. It is about Kylie trying to figure out her life just as evil has come out from lurking in the shadow. It was a great sequel to the first, and they were both really good and the second book did not tear the first one down. If you ever read the first book, definitely read the second.

Born at Midnight

This week I read Born at Midnight written by C.C. Hunter. It is about a girl named Kylie who is anything but normal. She is sent off to a camp were everyone is supernatural. She does not think that she is anything but human, until she realizes that her stalker is actually a ghost. I loved this book. It was really detailed, but it was a quick read. Overall it was such a good book, that I loved.

She has an older sister and a younger sister, so she is stuck in the middle with no attention to her. After a terrible event happens, Fern feels responsible. This book was super amazing I loved so much. It was really sad, but is was very well written and heartfelt. Overall I would definitely recommend it.

30/31 SoL

We were at the mall sitting in the lounge area with our fro-yo. All of the sudden I see Julia with waving arms looking up. I follow her eyes up and I see Sarah and Hailey. We get there attention and go window shopping with them until they had to leave. It was so fun. Then Julia and I went back to her house and we played monopoly until we craved to go outside and play basketball.....Continued on the last SOL.......

31/31 SOL!!!

Basketball is a sport that I share with my friends. It is fun, exciting, exhilarating, and there can be many laughs involved. In the winter it is what I look forward to other than sledding of course. Even when you have to walk from the school to the gym wearing only shorts and your jersey, it is so worth it to be able to play basketball. I have played since I was either four or five and have played and loved it ever since.

Light at first but then after hard almost turning into hail. A strike of lightning and clap of thunder. Rain.

16

You may look at this number and think oh your sweet sixteen party or some math thing. But I think of it as very lucky. I have tried to get this number every year or season the I can, because I do not know what it is, but every year or season when I got that number I would play really well and even something great would happen. But on the other hand when I did not get the number bad things would happen. So to you it might just be a number, but to me it way more than that.

SOL 26/31 Max and Kam's Class

We ran into the freezing water not looking back. Wind blowing in our faces and down out backs. Going back and forth between the water and the sand. Eventually we saw huge rocks that seemed to have an opening between them. We run over and explore finding our own little private beach and pool from the water that washed up. we stayed for a while but then the wind began to pick up going faster and faster. All of the sudden with our backs turned to the wind a thousand needles stabbing us everywhere.  Trying the run back to the place where every one else was, we were dragged in the opposite direction. Finding rocks to cover us from the hurdling sand, we have to find a different path to get back. The thousand needles. Hurdling sand.

She lives in poverty with a very alcoholic father. She loves to read and gives her an escape from where and how she is living. This book was really well written and I really liked it. I now want to read the others in that series. Overall it was a really really good book and I would definitely recommend it.

SOL 24/31 Max and Kam's Class

You may have noticed that a lot of my slices are about Julia Buendal. Well that is because there are so many memories that have happened between us. So many inside jokes, priceless moments and many more to come. Most people do not understand. I have known her since kindergarten and for seven and a half years we have spent an amazing time creating those special moments, including multiple recesses spent deeply discussing our favorite TV shows. There are also those little things that we do that kill the people around us but to us bring up so many memories. So yes a lot of my slices are about her and my times with her, but that is not going to change because there are so many more memories to come and they will keep coming forever.

After a few days of contemplation we decide on the name Stella.

We finished eating and headed through the stores picking out different items and spending all of our money. Walking from store to store stopping for Tevanna samples and many food stops. Making sure to stay clear of a certain store, we make great purchases including a heaping load of candy, gum, and a lot of other stuff. This was one of Ms. Buendal and I usual trips to the mall. Most people think that what girls do at the mall is shop for clothes and come back with bags piling there arms, but I know that our trips are mostly full of eating and only two or three bags that barley ever have a single piece of clothing in them. So in my opinion it is pretty stereotypical. Overall it was really fun and we had a great time

We were all in a jeep in the jungle. For some reason we had to leave out phones at the beginning of the trail. We travel down the trail pointing out different animals and trees. A group of girls were huddled in a circle with a bug on one of their hands. They won't show it to our guide. After a while the girls hand has come off because of the bug. Then we go to this river and take off our shoes about to get in when I hear one of our shows ringing very loud. It turns out the Ms. Buendal is just face timing me.

It is one of those things that you either love it or you hate it. To me there is not in between or "like it." This thing is soccer. I have seen both sides from many people but that could never change my decision about it. I will always love the sport even if I am not playing it. During our off season I spend most of the time dreaming how when the season starts again and I can get those grass stains and bruises. They may seem like something that you would not want to get, but it tells me that I play hard. The acceleration of running down the filed while dribbling the ball. The other part I love is when I can play soccer with my friends. Either with them or against them it is the best and most fun feeling in the world. I wish that feeling could be bottled because everyone should be able to feel this.

She is put into a store to be bought. She is bought by the family of the Governor. She is there for company in replace of there old daughter who left to go to an university. But after a while she starts to get memories, starts to taste, adn starts to feel. Everything opposite than what a beta should be. Many other big events happen, but I would not want to spoil it. Overall this was a really good book that I loved.

A paint brush is so different from the pen or pencil or any marker. It can change any color. It is not forced to be one color and it never has to be bland. Also it can make any shape or pattern with a smooth silky stroke. The is not fuss with having to carry multiple pens or markers just to get different color. With a paint brush you only have to carry a single tray of paint with any colors that you want. Lastly a paintbrush will never dry out, as long as you wash it off it can last a lifetime

SOLSC 13/31 Max ad Kam's Classroom

I stand in a dark room with four sides, and there is no way out. Then they turn into mirrors and smash into a million pieces. I am in another room, with no walls just a long infinite stretch. I run everywhere for so long, but all of a sudden I find a knife and I stab the floor. The floor breaks open and I drop for what seems like hours. I splash into water, it is pitch black. There is not up, there is no down. So all I can do is sink deeper and deeper until I am no longer awake. Sinking deeper and deeper. I never breathe again, yet I am still alive. I fall back asleep to a noise, then wake up to my alarm clock.

We used tape over our mouths to make sure that we could not talk. Rosie was able to talk to other people, so she helped explain. We wrote on the board. Most people were confused and their reactions were interesting and amusing.

She has to uncover her past to save the future of her world.

I had met her in preschool, but we were so young that we barely could remember it, but then I met her again when I came to Logan. She was the person who I shadowed, then when I came officially we became really great friends. This girl was Avery.

SOLSC 5/31 Max and Kam's Classroom

In Hawaii next to the pool I look around. My sister stands next to me. Across the pool are two girls are age. We walk over and the connection is imediatally. We learn that they live in New Jersey. The girl my age is named Alexa. We hangout with them all the way through the trip, and then once we have to leave we make sure that we will always stay in touch. We have gone on the two biggest trips with them and we are still in touch with them.

SOLSC 4/31 Max and Kam's Classroom

This week I read Across the Universe written by Beth Revis. I loved this book so much. It's about a girl named Amy who is "frozen" and put on a spaceship to arrive at a new earth 300 years from when she is "frozen." But 50 years before they are supposed to get to earth she gets unplugged and very bad things start to happen. I loved this book very much. It switches back and forth from the two main characters, but it does it really well. Overall this was an amazing book.

SOLSC 3/31 Max and Kam's Classroom

Slice #3

Because in Santorini, Greece you just have to ride a donkey….

More than a thousand stairs leading up to the actual city and there is no way that we are going to walk up it. Instead we ride donkeys all the way up. The "guide" starts to put people on random donkeys, and once everyone is on we start the long journey. Its a pretty bumpy ride, but overall it was really fun.

SOLSC 2/31 Max and Kam's Classroom

Slice of Life #2

The anxiety, the heartbeat that feels so stronger you think that everyone can hear it, and the screaming and cheering. The same when you are on the bench and the court/field. This is why I love to play sports. All of the adrenalin when you are racing down the court or field with the ball and then you shoot and score. It is one of the best feelings in the world. When you lose after all of the hard work you feel disappointed and heavy as you drag your feet, but when you win the game you do not even care about all of the grass stains or the bruises. All that matters is the glowing feeling of victory.

SOLSC 1/31 Max and Kam's Classroom

Slice of Life #1

On the first day of kindergarten I was wearing a pink shirt and two very high pigtails. When we walked into the big colorful classroom we were told to sit in a circle around a big rug. At first i was nervous but as I adjusted it was really fun. I sat down in the back and surveyed the other kids. All were different and I liked that. I knew that I could make friends there. Later in the afternoon after lunch I went to the bathroom and I had the following conversation with someone who at that time was a stranger. We had the following conversation:
H: "Is there anyone in here?"I asked.
?: "Uh..." in a small voice.
H:"Hi!"
?: "Hi" the voice got louder.
H: " What's your name?"
?: "Julia"said the voice getting becoming clear.
H:"Hi I'm Haley."

I had not even seen her face but I knew that this girl would be my best friend.

Those are not even half of the details, but that day I met Julia, a girl who I have been friends with for seven and a half years and counting. We have been to the moon and back with each other and have so many memories including being kicked out of the "big girl" bathroom in kindergarten coincidentally. She was one of my first friend that I made at Steck and I would not be alive with out her.

Shark Girl

Over EXPO week/Winter Collective I read Shark Girl written by Kelly Bingham. This book is about a fifteen-year-old girl named Jane who one day at the beach is attacked by a shark. They have to amputate her arm and the rest of the book is about her readjusting to her new life. I really liked this book because it was not only about the attack but also the process of how she had to deal with it. It was written in the first person so you got to know her thoughts and her perspective.  Overall it was a really good book and I recommend it.

Slice of Life

One minute on the clock we are down by three points. We shot a three- pointer and its in the hoop in a flash. The clock ticks down second by second. We are tied. The last second we have the ball and right as that buzzer rings through the gym seeming like the loudest thing, it is not. It is the swish of the hoop letting us know that we have won the game.

The One and Only Ivan

For my short younger classic I read The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine Applegate. This book is about a silver back gorilla named Ivan who lives at a circus with a stray dog named Bob and an elephant named Stella. One day a baby elephant arrives at the circus and Ivan promises Stella to make sure that this baby elephant one day can live in a better happier place. I really liked this book. I thought it was really well written and the story even though it could maybe never happen the way it was written was really believable. Overall even though this book is younger it still is definitely a classic and if you have not read it you should.

Savvy

This week I read Savvy. It was a easy read, but it was around 350 pages. It starts out with a girl named Mississippi whose family Has something a bit different about them. Once a person in their family turns 13 you get a "gift," but you do not know what it is until you have it.  This book had a lot of twist and turns that I really enjoyed.

Belly Up

This week I read Belly Up. AS i read further and further into the book I realized two things. 1; This was sort of a younger book and was too easy too read. 2; I did not enjoy this book. It is about a boy who lives at a zoo because his parents are zoo keepers. Then a hippo dies at the zoo and the boy and another girl tries to solve the mystery of why the hippo died. I did not really like this book, because it was kind of boring and slow.

Slice of Life

The higher we get the more excited we become. We speed though the sky, yet we feel as though we are not even moving. The scenery changes in an instant. From snowy mountains to flat plains to smooth lakes to Hilly deserts. All around the plane there is noise. Screaming babies, chatting adults, and laughing kids. The plane starts to go up, but wait it's actually going down, all the way down until the moment where the wheels hit the ground. We have arrived.
I took this photo over the weekend from out plane its of the rocky mountains.

The Great Gatsby

I read The Great Gatsby for my classic. It is about a man named Nick who one night ends up at his neighbor Jay Gatsby's house for one of his parties. He meets a woman named Jordan who he starts to fall in love with. The he meets Jay Gatsby who wants Nicks help to help him become in contact with Nicks second cousin once removed. It was an amazing book that I really liked, but it did have some parts that were sad and shocking. I definitely think that it should be considered a classic because its a book that's really memorable and it tells a story about how anything can happen and really quickly also.

Slice of Life

The cool wind that chills us turns into beating sun so quickly that we do not even notice. We are too busy inching towards the edge of our seats waiting for the game too begin. The whistle is blown and all we can see is blurs of black, yellow, red, and white, but only black and yellow is scoring. My sister whips her stick and the bright lime green lacrosse ball goes racing past the goalie. In the end the score is 23 to 0 with my sister scoring many of the points. Her team won her whole tournament.

Its about a nine year old boy named Bruno who has to move from his house in Berlin because of his fathers work. Her comes across a fence and a boy and he starts to talk to this boy everyday. This book was very well written and it had some mysterious aspects to it. Overall this book was really good and i would definitely recommend it.

Slice of Break

Over break Julia Michele Obama Chavez Venezuela Johnson Golslee Pods Fort Collins Klein Beundel* and I went sledding. Sure, we only went down three times but it was still fun. Well on the way back. Let me start from the beginning...

Julia and I had planned to meet each other at the park, but I was not ready so I told her to come down to my house. She finally picked up my phone call and complained. When she finally got here I was ready and she said she was too tired and she had walked too far DOWNHILL. I told her that we would go even if I had to drag her up the hill, which I did all the way UPHILL. She complained the whole way so I threw snow at her. Finally we go to the bottom of the hill and she commanded "TAKE ME TO THE TOP" At that moment I wanted to kill her but I did not. She started to  "*#@^" at me so I did it anyway. She "#%^@"ed right when a small child came down the hill and said, "Mommy that little girl said......" I quickly pulled the "queen pain" away before she did anything we would regret later. We went down a few times before she had to go potty. As she did it I hid her sled. After she did this she announced "I AM NOW READY TO GO HOME." I told her "REALLY!?" Because she had just made me drag her all the way to the top and through the street and now she was "cold." She told me that she would drag me back, but I know that she only offered to because it was downhill. Even though Julia Michele Obama Chavez Venezuela Johnson Golslee Pods Fort Collins Klein Beundel really got on my nerves and was acting like a sassy diva i still love her and she it a sister to me.**

*This amazing name is something you should be jealous of.
